World Environment Day 2008

When: 5 June

World Environment Day - 5 JuneWorld Environment Day on 5 June, in Waitakere, is offering the opportunity to win a year's free public transport - or at least an energy efficient lightbulb or a re-usable cloth shopping bag - as a reward for using public transport.

This day is organised every year on June 5 by the United Nations Environmental Program (UNEP), to raise world awareness of environmental issues and hopefully, generate increasing numbers of people wanting to live in sustainable communities.

The theme of World Environment Day 2008 is 'Kick the Habit! Towards a low carbon economy.'

Matariki Celebrations 2008

When: 5 June - 5 July

Matariki: 5 June - 5 JulyMatariki is the Maori name for the star cluster commonly known as Pleiades or The Seven Sisters; when translated Matariki has been known Mata-riki (tiny eyes), or Mata-ariki (eyes of god).

This year the Matariki star cluster comes into view on the morning of the 5 June and is traditionally celebrated until the next New Moon this year it falls on the 5 July.

Matariki means celebrating the unique place in which we live and giving respect to the land we live on.

It's a celebration of Maori customs, so art in its many forms is very important to Matariki.

It is a time to share with each other skills, achievements and history through story telling, song and dance, carving and weaving, ceremonies and passing on of knowledge and history.

Matariki is also a special time of year to celebrate being a New Zealander and showcase our unique Maori culture.
