Waitakere was New Zealand’s first community accredited by the World Health Organisation as a “Safe Community”. The Council and Safe Waitakere continue to push for communities that are “safer by design”.

Bethells Beach Surf Lifesaving Patrol
The patrol currently has around 65 active members and 40 junior
surf members who are taught skills to become an active surf
lifeguard.
Karekare Surf Lifesaving Patrol
An active patrol is provided at the beach in the weekends and on
public holidays from Labour Weekend to Easter each year.
Waitakere road safety
The Transport Assets section of the Council implements road safety programmes.
These programmes are run as part of regional and national
programmes.

Trust
The Trust is empowered to fund community safety initiatives,
training, education, overseas travel, attendance at conferences
and private sector technological developments beneficial to road
safety.
