Privacy Statement

“The Privacy Act 1993 seeks to provide protection for individual privacy in relation to the collection, use, access, correction and disclosure of personal information held by any public and private sector "agency" (e.g. Waitakere City Council). Personal information may be collected only for a lawful purpose connected with a function or activity of the Council and only if necessary for that purpose. Such information must, as a general rule, be collected directly from the individual concerned and that person must be told why the information is needed.

The Council holds information about ratepayers and residents of Waitakere City in its role as an agency. This information is required for lawful purposes used in the functioning of Waitakere City Council, and is sourced and held in accordance with Principle 2 and Part 7 (Public Registers) of the Privacy Act. You have the right to access information about yourself and have it corrected (an application must be made in writing).

Enquiries about or formal requests for information in relation to the Privacy Act 1993 or the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act 1987 should be made in writing to: Manager - Democracy & Support Services.

Please note that we may collect website visitors’ contact information, e.g. email addresses. This information may be used to send general promotional material about our activities, which we believe may be useful to you. Notwithstanding this, we would only use or disclose personal information that you have provided to us or which we have obtained about you if:

  • You have authorised us to do so;
  • We have informed you of the intended use or disclosure and you have not objected to that use or disclosure; or
  • We are authorised, required or permitted by law to use or disclose the information e.g. for law enforcement.

For more detailed information on this subject refer to the Privacy Act or the Privacy Commissioner's article "The Privacy Act & You". This provides a link to the 12 information privacy principles which deal with the collection, holding, use and disclosure of personal information. If you believe we have breached the Privacy Act, or are not sure of our obligations, you can phone the Privacy Commissioner’s hotline on 0800 803 909 or visit the Office of the Privacy Commissioner's website.
